Ingredients

The most important rule of mixology is choosing the right ingredients. When it comes to selecting liquors and mixers, consider the flavors you enjoy as well as how they will work together. Pay attention to quality; a higher-quality liquor will produce a more enjoyable drink.
When mixing drinks, think about the type of alcohol used – whether it’s vodka, whiskey or something else – and pair it with compatible ingredients that won’t clash with one another. For instance, opt for club soda if your drink contains vodka and choose ginger ale for rum-based cocktails.

Flavor Combinations

In addition to selecting quality ingredients, understanding flavor combinations is essential in creating delicious drinks. If you’re not sure what flavors go together, start by experimenting with complementary tastes such as sweet and sour or light and strong.
For example, try combining orange juice or cranberry juice with vodka for a classic cocktail like an Orange Crush or Cosmopolitan – two popular favorites among amateur bartenders! Other combos include gin & tonic (gin + tonic water), margarita (tequila + lime juice + triple sec) or Long Island Iced Tea (vodka + rum + tequila). With enough practice even novice mixologists can master some truly unique recipes!

Garnishes

Adding garnishes is an often forgotten step but can really take your mixed drinks from average to extraordinary! A few dashes of bitters can bring out subtle notes in cocktails while slices of citrus fruit give them added aroma and visual appeal. You don’t have to be too fancy here – simply adorning your creation with a classic maraschino cherry atop its foamy head is enough to make any imbiber happy.
Herbs are also great additions because their aromatics make each sip more complex; think mint leaves for mojitos or rosemary sprigs for martinis. In fact many herbs have anti-inflammatory properties so you can actually improve the health benefits when sipping on these delicious concoctions!
