What Is Tequila?

Tequila is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from the fermented juice of the blue agave plant. It has been produced in Mexico since at least the 16th century and is now one of the most popular spirits around! The flavor profile of tequila can vary depending on how it’s made, but usually it has notes of citrus, pepper, caramel and woody herbs.
Tequila comes in four categories: blanco (silver), joven (gold), reposado (aged) and añejo (extra aged). These categories refer to how long they have been aged in oak barrels — with blanco being un-aged or only briefly aged for up to two months. Each type offers its own unique characteristics that will affect your cocktails differently.

How To Use Tequila In Cocktails

Using tequila in cocktails is easy once you know what kind you should use. Blanco tequilas are best used when making Margaritas as their freshness works well with lime juice—a key ingredient in this classic cocktail. Reposado and Añejo tequilas offer more complexity due to their aging process, so these are better suited for heavier drinks like Old Fashioneds or Manhattans.

When using tequila as an ingredient it’s important to consider the other flavors present too; some combinations work better than others such as combining herbal liqueurs like sage or basil with aged tequilas while fruity liqueurs pair nicely with silver varieties. Experimenting with different ingredients may lead you down unexpected paths but don’t be afraid to try something new – who knows what delicious concoction might come out!

At the end of day there really aren’t any hard rules when it comes to using tequila in cocktails – just let your creativity take over! With a bit of experimentation you can find something new every time you mix up a drink featuring this versatile spirit.

Whether its margaritas, old fashioneds or something entirely off-the-wall – never be afraid to experiment and explore all that this amazing spirit has to offer.
