Gin vs Vodka: What’s the Difference?

When it comes to understanding the difference between gin and vodka, there are a few key elements that come into play. Gin is typically made from fermented grains such as barley or rye, while vodka is usually made from potatoes, wheat or corn. This means that gin has an herbal flavor due to its juniper base, while vodka tends towards a cleaner and more neutral taste.

The alcohol content of each spirit also varies significantly; gin usually contains 37-47% ABV (alcohol by volume) whereas vodka can range anywhere between 40-60%, making it much stronger than its counterpart.

Can You Substitute One For The Other in Cocktails?

In general, experts agree that you may be able to substitute one for the other in cocktails without too much disruption depending on what type of cocktail you’re making. If your recipe calls for a clear liquor like vodka then using a white rum instead may not have too drastic an effect on taste.

However if your recipe calls for strong flavors like herbs or spices then swapping out the core spirit could really affect how your drink tastes at the end – so it’s best to stick with whatever is called for! Furthermore when experimenting with substitutions always start with less than what’s recommended and gradually add more until you find just the right balance of ingredients – this way you won’t overpower any one element in your final product.

Which Drinks Work Best With Gin Versus Vodka?

Cocktails that include clear spirits tend to work better with either option as they don’t rely heavily on flavour notes associated with their respective liquors – think martinis and mojitos here.

On the other hand drinks which feature bolder flavours such as gins & tonics or Bloody Marys are likely better off sticking to their original recipes because these beverages depend strongly upon particular flavors provided by either gin or vodka respectively – so mixing things up could potentially ruin them altogether!
