Batanga: The Simple Tequila Cocktail with Mexican Coca-Cola

Although it has only recently become popular in bars, clubs and restaurants around the world, its origins can be traced back to Mexico City in 1966.

Legend has it that the first Batanga was created by Don Javier Delgado Corona at his bar La Capilla Bar in Mexico City. He began mixing equal parts of tequila and Mexican Coca-Cola with a splash of lime juice to give it extra zing. To add flair to this classic combo he sprinkled coarse salt around the rim instead of sugar as was customarily done at that time.

Word quickly spread about this new delicious concoction throughout Latin America and before long it became one of the most popular cocktails being served up at parties or during celebrations all across Mexico and Central America. Its popularity eventually crossed more borders as people from around the globe embraced its unique flavor profile.

Course: Drinks

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces of tequila
  • 4 ounces of Mexican cola or regular cola
  • 1 ounce of lime juice
  • A pinch of salt for garnish

Instructions

  • Fill a highball glass with ice.
  • Pour in the tequila and Mexican cola, followed by the lime juice. Swirl together briefly to combine the ingredients.
  • Garnish with a pinch of salt and serve immediately!

Glassware

Typical glassware used for a Batanga cocktail is typically a highball or collins glass. The tall, slender shape of these glasses allows the bubbles from the cola to rise and emphasizes the layering effect created by combining different liquids. It also provides ample room to add garnishes such as lime wedges and salt rims, which are popular accompaniments for this drink.

Flavors

The flavor profile of the Batanga cocktail is a delightful blend of sweet and salty. The sweetness comes from the cola, which provides a sugary, caramel-y taste to balance out the tartness of the lime juice.

The addition of tequila brings an earthy spiciness that pairs nicely with hints of smoke and oak coming through in each sip. To top it all off, a pinch of salt helps to bring out all the flavors while adding an extra layer of complexity. With its complex flavor profile, this drink is sure to be a hit at any gathering!

3 Tips for Making Your Batanga

  • Make sure to use freshly-squeezed lime juice for the best flavor!
  • Consider using Mexican cola for a unique blend of sweetness and spice.
  • To make this drink extra refreshing, add a lime wheel to your glass!
